Local wind energy expertise in latest New Zealand's wind farm
(Windtech International) The New Zealand Wind Energy Association says the official opening of New Zealands newest wind farm, Te Rere Hau in Palmerston North, is a significant moment in the maturing of the local wind energy industry. Fraser Clark, newly appointed Chief Executive to the New Zealand Wind Energy Association, says the new wind farm is significant because it is operated by a small local company and was built using locally designed and built technology.
Spain government plans wind energy remuneration cap
(Forbes) Spain's Ministry of Industry is planning to impose a ceiling on the remuneration electricity generators receive for their wind farm production, La Gaceta de los Negocios reported citing a draft law. According to La Gaceta, the government plans to impose the ceiling to curb the advantages wind farm operators are taking of high oil prices, which in turn have sent pool prices soaring.
Council against 'ring' of wind farms
(Yorkshire Post Today) Fears over air safety have prompted council chiefs to refuse to back dozens of huge wind turbines planned for land between Doncaster and Lincolnshire. Campaigners have been fighting plans for the wind farms, which would litter the area between Thorne, near Doncaster, and Crowle with turbines 125 metres (410ft) tall. Among their fears are the visual impact such schemes would have. They say they would create a "ring of steel" around the protected and valuable Thorne and Hatfield moors site.
Wind turbines for the Shire Hall roof in Gloucester?
(24dash.com) Labour are calling for up to six wind turbines to be put on the roof of Shire Hall in Gloucester, and for wind turbines to be installed on schools, libraries, and care homes throughout Gloucestershire. Peter Chamberlain, County Councillor for Coleford, said: "Wind turbines on Shire Hall will be a high profile demonstration of what we can all do in our commitment to the environment.
Tower to assess wind power potential
(South Bend Tribune) A Pennsylvania company has won zoning approval to erect a 197-foot weather tower to gauge whether northeastern Indiana's winds are strong enough to support an electricity-generating wind farm. The project's approval comes a week after Duke Energy Corp. agreed to buy electricity from the state's first large-scale wind farm, set to come on line late next year.
Yarmouth to revisit wind power bylaw
(Cape Cod Times) A wind facilities zoning bylaw was sent back to the drawing board after disagreement at Yarmouth's special town meeting over what types of properties it could affect.''It shows a broader base of support and interest from Yarmouth citizens in helping to craft the bylaw,'' Brian Braginton-Smith, chairman of the Yarmouth energy committee, said Friday. Although the intent of the bylaw was to address municipal properties, a minimum 10-acre requirement restricted small-property owners, according to detractors of the regulation.
New Vestas Wind Project in Italy's Apulia Region
(RenewableEnergyAccess.com) Vestas has received an order for 18 units of the V90-2.0 MW turbine with a total installed capacity of 36 megawatts (MW). The order is placed by Inergia SPA, which will install the turbines in the Apulia Region close to Surbo, a town with 12,000 people located near the city of Lecce. Lecce3, which is the name of the project, will be the first big wind power plant to be installed in the southern part of Apulia.
MIT designs 'invisible,' floating wind turbines
(PhysOrg.com) An MIT researcher has a vision: Four hundred huge offshore wind turbines are providing onshore customers with enough electricity to power several hundred thousand homes, and nobody standing onshore can see them. The trick? The wind turbines are floating on platforms a hundred miles out to sea, where the winds are strong and steady. Today's offshore wind turbines usually stand on towers driven deep into the ocean floor. But that arrangement works only in water depths of about 15 meters or less.
Wind power arriving at DC hotel
(Washington Business Journal) Pepco Energy Services has received a contract to supply wind power to The Fairmont Washington Hotel. The three-year contract calls for Pepco Energy Services to supply the 415-room hotel with more than 3 million kilowatt hours generated from renewable resources. Beginning next March, 10 percent of the energy will come from wind farms in the mid-Atlantic region.
Huge Windmills to Arrive Today at Duluth Harbor
(Business Wire) Shortly after 4:00 p.m. today, a cargo ship from Sweden, the BBC India, is expected to arrive at the Duluth Harbor carrying a shipment of windmill blades, turbines and equipment that when assembled will become the largest wind energy facility in North Dakota. Minnesota Power announced last April that it is partnering with FPL Energy to create the Oliver County Wind Energy Center, which will generate up to 50.6 Megawatts of clean, renewable wind energy.
Wind farm proposal angers some in Savoy
(North Adams Transcript) An informational update on the proposed wind energy project was held Thursday night at the fire station, and several residents used the meeting as a chance to angrily voice their opinions about a project that is mired in controversy and uncertainty. Environmental and maintenance issues connected to the building of the wind turbines' access road, along with concerns about sound, lighting and appearance of the turbines, were discussed in a question-and-answer session between residents and Minuteman Wind LLC, a Waltham-based partnership of energy professionals who want to complete the 12.5-megawatt facility by spring 2008.
