Hydrogen Blowin' in the Wind
(Wired Blogs) GM recognizes that the ultimate success or failure of fuel cell vehicles will be inextricably linked to hydrogen production from renewable resources. In an editorial in the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle, GM chief engineer Matthew Fronk says that creating hydrogen by harnessing wind power supports the company's work on fuel cell vehicles. Put simply, automakers recognize that without an abundant hydrogen supply, there will be no market for fuel cell vehicles. Wind energy and hydrogen production have natural synergies that together make a strong economic (and environmental) argument.

Ramblers demand an end to spread of wind farms
(The Observer) The Ramblers' Association is set to announce its opposition to the construction of onshore wind farms across the country. The move is a major blow for the government, which is struggling to maintain its pledge to increase the amount of electricity generated by renewable energy sources. The decision to try to block large wind farms in Britain follows the association's role in persuading the Scottish Executive to stop construction of a group of turbines in Perthshire on the grounds that the development would damage the environment.

Turbine plan in the wind
(New York Daily News) Winergy Power LLC, an energy company based in Hauppauge, is looking to build three 445-foot turbine towers, about 21/2 miles off Orient Point, southeast of Plum Island. Dennis Quaranta, president of Winergy, said the proposed $30 million research project would be the first in the U.S. and, if it proves successful, his firm would seek to build larger wind farms from Rhode Island to Delaware, 15 to 20 miles offshore.

Lyons Considers Bringing in Wind Farms
(13WHAM-TV) Wayne County isn't getting much attention from developers looking to put in wind farms. So a group of citizens went looking for a way to bring the alternative energy sources to their hometowns.According to Keith Pitman, Lyons is the perfect place for a wind turbine. He runs Empire State Wind Energy, a company founded by Paychex billionaire Tom Golisano. The company's not out to make money. It just wants to break even and convince communities like Lyons to invest in alternative energy, even if they've been passed up by big wind farm developers looking for only the most lucrative projects.

Life not a breeze for wind farms
(Deseret News) An embattled wind farm development set to begin construction next year in Spanish Fork may serve as a microcosm for the future of wind energy in Utah and across the nation.Stuart Johnson, Deseret Morning NewsWindmills are situated in a high-wind area near Camp Williams, background. Wasatch Wind's farm is planned at the mouth of Spanish Fork Canyon. The farm, a project of Utah-based Wasatch Wind, will be the state's first commercial wind farm.

Flying Electric Generator: Generating power at 35,000 feet
(Daily News & Analysis) The world's quest to find alternate sources of energy to reduce dependence on fossil fuels is encouraging new and innovative ideas, with a US-based firm now looking to generate electricity from wind at a height of 10,000 feet to as much as 35,000 feet in the sky. California headquartered Sky Windpower Corporation has tested its ‘Flying Electric Generator' or ‘rotorcraft' at low altitude of 60 feet in Australia and is working on a demonstration project of a higher capacity generator at an altitude of 10,000-15,000 feet where wind speed is greater.

Essar to foray into wind power
(Business Standard) Energy major Essar is making a foray into the renewable energy sector with a licence agreement with Germany's Re Power to manufacture and market 1.5 Mw wind turbines in India and south-east Asia. The two companies have agreed to set up a joint venture in the near future, which will allow access to 3 Mw and 5 Mw turbines and a wider market reach. A senior Essar Power official said the demand for big turbines of 1.5-2 Mw was growing in India, with several MNCs looking at setting up wind farms.

Dutch moving wind turbines offshore
(The State) For centuries, Dutch windmills have pumped water out of the low-lying country, and old-fashioned wooden mills are as closely linked with the Netherlands' international image as its dikes and bikes. But in the face of a large and growing lobby against the windmill's modern electricity-generating counterpart - the wind turbine - the country has started moving them offshore and out of sight.
