Plan submitted for 18 wind turbines
(Pittsburgh Post Gazette) Lookout Windpower Project LLC has submitted plans to build 18 wind turbines about 4 miles from the borough of Berlin. The Leawood, Kan.-based company said it will move forward quickly with the project if it receives approval from the Somerset County Planning Commission. Two other companies have also filed plans for wind farms with the commission. Costs of the Lookout project were not immediately disclosed. About three dozen wind turbines operate in Somerset County, providing electricity to Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland.

Essar to sign pact with Germany to manufacture wind turbines
(Myiris.com) Energy major Essar is making a foray into the renewable energy sector with a licence agreement with Germany`s Re Power to manufacture and market 1.5 Mw wind turbines in India and south-east Asia, reports Business Standard. The two companies have agreed to set up a joint venture in the near future, which will allow access to 3 Mw and 5 Mw turbines and a wider market reach.

David Bellamy to speak at wind farm meeting
(Bridlington Free Press) Opponents of a controversial wind farm scheme are welcoming the support of top conservationist David Bellamy. Dr Bellamy will be a special guest at a meeting on Monday to discuss the effects of the planned wind farm on the local environment and tourism in the area. Organisers have leafleted the local villages, including Lissett, where the airfield which would house the 12-turbine site is located, and they hope for a bumper turn-out at the meeting, to be held at Far Grange Caravan Park, Skipsea. Objectors claim the meeting will discuss the truth about wind farms, with Dr Bellamy contributing on the environmental and social aspects of the scheme.

Locals critique wind project
(Berkshire Eagle) An informational update on the proposed wind energy project was held Thursday night at the fire station, and several residents used the meeting as a chance to angrily voice their opinions about a project that is mired in controversy and uncertainty. Environmental and maintenance issues connected to the building of the wind turbines' access road, along with concerns about sound, lighting and appearance of the turbines, were discussed in a question-and-answer session between residents and Minuteman Wind LLC, a Waltham-based partnership of energy professionals who want to complete the 12.5-megawatt facility by spring 2008.

Texas' lead in export business continues to widen
(MyWestTexas.com) From 1845 until 1959, when Alaska joined the Union, Texas was the number one state in the U.S. in terms of geographic size. Even though we no longer hold that title, there are still numerous areas in which Texas is the nation's leader. Right off the bat, you can probably think of several. Texas has the greatest amount of proven crude oil reserves, produces more natural gas than any other state and is the nation's largest wind energy generator. In 2002, Texas became the largest exporter in the U.S., surpassing California, the perennial leader up until that time.

Application filed for FdL County wind farm project
(The Reporter) Wisconsin Power and Light Co. on Thursday filed an application with state regulators to develop a Fond du Lac County wind farm project. The project consists of about 40 wind turbines across 12.2 square miles in the Towns of Eden and Empire. The wind farm would generate enough electricity to power 20,500 homes. The project is estimated to cost between $140 million and $175 million.

Praises fly as project for wind farm begins
(Buffalo News) The developers of a wind turbine farm on the old Bethlehem Steel plant property celebrated its groundbreaking Friday, hailing the project, dubbed "Steel Winds," as a bold and progressive step for the region and the environment. "As of today, we're not at an old steel mill," said Paul Curran, the managing director of BQ Energy, the Pawling, N.Y.-based company spearheading the project, as he addressed politicians and local business officials who gathered at the site. "We're at a new wind farm," Curran said.

Trade winds should be put to use as energy source
(Honolulu Star-Bulletin) Fourteen wind turbines are scheduled to be built in South Point on the Big Island to provide power for 10,000 households. While the state is turning to ethanol to contribute to running motor vehicles, industry is looking at alternative energy sources to satisfy a growing demand for electricity. The Big Island is leading the way, adding wind as a source in South Point beginning next March. Honolulu should look to examples being set by neighbor islands to bolster its energy sources.

Non conventional energy
(The New Nation) A non traditional source of energy of much potential in the rural areas of Bangladesh is solar power. It is very well suited for rural Bangladesh because it does not involve expending so much resources on wires, poles and other equipment. Users need to make only a one time investment in solar panels that last decades with good maintenance. They do not have to pay bills and are not harassed by regular power shut-offs of the type suffered by consumers of the Rural Electrification Board.

FAA gives OK to two wind power projects in Wisconsin
(WBAY) The Federal Aviation Administration has given approval to two Wisconsin wind power projects that were stalled by concerns that the turbines may interfere with military radar. Permits have been issued for the Forward Wind Energy Center in Fond du Lac and Dodge counties and the Butler Ridge wind farm in Dodge County. F-A-A Manager Bruce Beard says the projects can start being built. A bureaucratic delay was created by a provision in a congressional bill that wind energy companies say was drafted to create more hurdles for a high-profile and controversial offshore wind project in Massachusetts.
