Nova Scotia Renewable Energy Advocates Call for Feed-In Tariffs
Currently Nova Scotia has no renewable energy policy. Rates are determined by Nova Scotia Power Inc. (NSPI). Renewable energy producers believe the government has ignored the 1990 URB decision that it must play a role in determining prices paid to independent power producers (IPPs). This policy has allowed NSPI to continue and strengthen its monopoly role in determining when and if they purchase renewables and what price they pay. Independent wind energy producers in Nova Scotia presently receive less than 7 cents/kWh from NSPI.
Wind power tube gets a lift out of Searsport
An 80-foot-long tube that got stuck in Searsport last week as it began a truck trek to a windmill project in Aroostook County finally got on its way Saturday. Searsport police Officer Steve Saucier said the tube was loaded onto a new trailer and had left Trundy Road off U.S. Route 1. About 50 tower sections resembling giant culverts 10 feet in diameter have arrived by ship at Mack Point in Searsport. They are to be put onto flat trailers designed for oversize loads. The sections are part of the $55 million Mars Hill Wind Farm project being developed by Evergreen Wind Power LLC.
Hawaii to get more wind power
Hawaii is about to get another major wind power project, and the details about it will be announced this week at the State Capitol. Senate Energy Chairman Kalani English and House Energy Chairwoman Hermina Morita will join Warren Bollmeier, president of the Hawaii Renewable Energy Alliance at noon Wednesday (Honolulu Room 325) to announce plans for a "wind farm to cut the Big Island's dependence on imported fossil fuel, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and provide electrical energy for more than 10,000 homes."
