Jamie Oliver plans to run restaurant on wind power
Jamie Oliver wants to power his restaurant in Cornwall using wind energy in an attempt to save energy and halve his electricity bills. The celebrity chef has applied to install two wind turbines on the roof of Fifteen in Watergate Bay, near Newquay.
Eco-hydro worth cost
Growing trend to wind, solar power. Homeowners opt to pay a bit more. Singer Gord Downie of the Tragically Hip pays more for electricity than you probably do - and he's proud of it. Downie and superstar chef Jamie Kennedy are among the more than 1,000 homeowners fulfilling their electricity needs with wind power and eco-friendly hydro.
Live off the grid with wind power
We may call it wind power, but in truth it all comes from solar energy. "Wind is created by the heating of the Earth in different locations and different amounts, which causes bodies of air to shift around," says Sean Whittaker, director of policy and technical issues at the Canadian Wind Energy Association. With turbines we tap into wind's energy. "Basically, the air passes over the blades of the turbine and creates lift, [which] causes a rotation," Mr. Whittaker says. "It's that rotation that you run through a generator that creates electricity." Turbines come in two configurations: horizontal axis, which are usually tower-mounted with the blades' axle running at right angles to the tower; and vertical axis, which resemble eggbeaters.
In the wind
In June, Brian Braginton-Smith of Community Wind Power made a proposal to the Dennis-Yarmouth Regional School Committee that he said could save the district up to $140,000. Community Wind Power would build two $3 million turbines at Station Avenue Elementary and D-Y High School and pay the district $50,000 per year to lease the land. Braginton-Smith said the district would save more money as the market price of electricity increased, and once the debt for building the turbines was paid, the schools would share the profits.
Homeowner hopes breeze cuts utility bills
Paul Westbrook figured he wasnt going to catch a break on his utility bill, so hes hoping a strong enough southern wind can help cut 40 percent off his tab. On Wednesday, the Texas Instruments engineer installed his own 35-foot wind turbine, one of several in a new consumer line of wind generators. It represents potential savings, but also an emerging wind industry market targeting residents, farms and small businesses.
Manitoba to quadruple its wind power
The Manitoba government plans to build enough wind towers over the next two years to quadruple its wind-generated power, Energy Minister Dave Chomiak announced Thursday. The province, along with Manitoba Hydro, hopes to add 300 megawatts of wind power to the province's energy grid - enough power for 100,000 homes. That could mean up to 160 more windmills, although newer and evolving wind turbine technology could make that number smaller.
Turkey Chooses Wind for Its Renewable Energy Needs
In order to meet Turkey's growing energy demand, Turkey has chosen to exploit its wind as a new energy source. According to Wind Force 2005/European Commission Study, Turkey has a wind potential of 88,000 megawatts (MW), the second most powerful wind area on the European continent after the UK.
Horse Hollow Wind Energy Center Now Largest Wind Farm in the World
FPL said today that as of the end of August it had completed 662 megawatts of the Horse Hollow Wind Energy Center in Texas, making it the largest wind farm in the world. When the last phase of the project is complete later this month, the Horse Hollow Wind Energy Center will have a total capacity of 735 megawatts.
